Care costs: at home and residential

Surrey County Council have a new tool, the Care Cost Indicator, which helps families understand the current and likely future long term costs of care – either at home, or going into residential care.

Carers and families may at some point have to think about brining in extra paid caring help at home, or consider residential care for their loved one.

For some families this is free. However, if you have savings between £14,250 and £23,250, you may need to pay part of your care costs. With savings over £23,250, you will likely pay for your own social care. In this situation, the person is known as a ‘self-funder’.

How the costs tool helps

This tool helps families understand what care might cost, now and over the years ahead. The tool shows likely average costs for both care at home, and residential care, with a sliding scale to see what the costs might be over several years. It helps you compare the cost of getting support at home with moving into a care home.

The webpage also has helpful information about staying independent, the different options, and planning in future, with signposting to other sources of support.
